Masks

Design for Context

How will solutions materialize when face mask design centers around textile innovation, cultural implications, social engagement, and accessibility? Students address these objectives through the following short-term explorations.

Lasagna Mask

Alex Burton

Without special skills such as sewing, individuals rely on buying masks from medical suppliers or professional makers. These masks may be expensive and in many cases are single use and purpose, their life cycle ending in landfills as waste. What if we could give people with agency over how they effectively participate in mandatory masking while challenging established notions of aesthetics and function of masks and everyday objects? How could we disrupt the mask market by creating a design that is “low tech”, affordable and easily made from readily available products or materials?
