Face 2 Face

How might we foster empathy and increase face-to-face communication for couples experiencing tension as a result of external crises in order to promote resilient relationships?

Many relationships have changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the associated distancing measures, uncertainty and isolation. For cohabitating couples, reduced external support and increased time together have created new dynamics and challenges. A documented rise in domestic violence presents an extreme example of some couples’ eroded or impeded ability to empathize, communicate and problem solve. Face 2 Face is a digital intervention designed to support relationships by building perspective, communication and initiating in-person, mutual resolution of conflict.

INSIGHT

The current pandemic has demonstrated how external stress and prolonged isolation can have significant impact on relationship health. This makes it much more difficult for couples to empathize, communicate and constructively work through problems.

The personal vulnerabilities of individuals can be amplified by crises that exaggerate maladaptive tendencies to withdraw emotionally or become increasingly anxious. Simultaneously, the pandemic has reduced access to support systems and resources. While applications for relationship counseling and individual therapy are available, a lack of support has become apparent to help contextualize the effects of crisis and instigate much needed face-to-face communication.

IDEA

Face 2 Face aims to promote mutual understanding and conflict resolution through guided check-ins, tailored external resources and constructive discussion, ultimately strengthening adaptive behavior and emotional bond.

The app employs emotional AI to help users build perspective and contextualize challenges. This includes broad analysis of ongoing events, offering insight into how external factors may be impacting users’ personal and relationship well-being. Face 2 Face creates moments of in-person connection that bridge the digital and physical spaces, shifting users' smartphones from points of disengagement into opportunities for direct communication.

IMPACT

Research demonstrates that individuals in supportive relationships are more capable of managing the negative effects of crisis, periods of uncertainty and stress. This is not only important during the current COVID-19 pandemic, but also for a future in which outbreaks and environmental disasters will become more frequent. Over time using Face 2 Face, couples would ideally be able to replicate strategies for connection and conflict resolution on their own however, as an intermittent fall back when new challenges arise or external crisis increases levels of stress, the app would be there to support relationship well-being.

I am driven to explore how design can shape human experiences and mindsets; developing solutions that are not only beautiful, thought-provoking and functional, but that also promote well-being, solve issues and actively participate in important discourses such as sustainable living and ecological responsibility.
